book summary

Listen Buddy tells the story of Buddy, who is a tiny bunny with gigantic ears, who is not the best listener.  His parents make requests of him and gets them all mixed up! When his mom asks for a slice of bread, he brings in a slice of the bed for a funny example.  This inability to listen though gets him in trouble when he is taking his first solo trip and didn’t hear the right directions for where he is going. He takes the wrong turn (of course) and ups up visiting the cave of the Scruffy Varmint and tries to help him cook soup, which turns into a mess and angers the varmint.  This is a fun read for kiddos who might need a little help in learning how to listen or follow directions.

suggested teaching point

On page 12, point out to students that Buddy is being allowed to go on a hop much farther away than he has ever gone before.  Before Buddy leaves, his parents told him that when he got to the split in the road, he needed to go left.  Have students make a prediction.  What do you think Buddy is going to do?  What evidence in the text supports your prediction?
